What is a novel coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause a wide range of illnesses from the common cold to more severe diseases (i.e. SARS, MERS). A novel coronavirus is a new strain that was not previously identified in humans.

What we know about COVID-19

We know that the modes of transmission include droplets sprayed by individuals (cough, sneeze), patient respiratory secretions and contaminated surfaces. The virus can be transmitted by animals and from human to human. Currently there is no available treatment for the virus therefore supportive measures are recommended.
